Winner of the 2022 NT Literary Awards: Brown's Mart Theatre category!
When a dinner party goes wrong, and a wealthy property mogul is caught with his pants down (literally), an intrepid sergeant and a useless deputy must unravel the case while three very unhelpful suspects misremember the details.
This absurd comedy blends cheeky adult humour with classic murder-mystery tropes.
Cast: 6 (or 7)
Roles: 3 female, 3 male
Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes (or 1h30m)
Genre: comedy
This play was performed at Darwin Fringe Festival 2022 - and sold out! It has also been performed by Warrandyte Theatre Company, Kalamunda Dramatic Society, and Ulverstone Repertory Theatre Society! A slightly longer adapted version with a 7th character is also available for licensing.
A sequel, Death of the Human Resource, is also available for production.
An interesting blend of Agatha Christie style mystery, absurdism, and Australian humour…
The humour… is never not funny, and helps to maintain a lightness to the material. The actual whodunnit side of the play is incredibly ingenious and quite believable in a contemporary setting.
[Under the Table] is a comedic and surreal take on the murder mystery… an innovative mix reminiscent of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out… a fast-paced crowd pleaser, full of laughs and surprising revelations. A great night out.
Sean Guy’s “Under the Table” is an endearing and quirky murder mystery which prioritises comedy over mystery, and succeeds in doing so… an amusing tale executed with flourish.
